Tomioka Tessai (1836 - 1924) A Japanese landscape painting, ink on paper, mounted has hanging scroll, depicting two scholars sitting on a cliff admiring the rushing waterfall, inscribed and signed Tessai Gaishi with two seals of the artist and two other seals. 130 x 63cm, with inscribed fitted wood box. cf. Tomioka Tessai is regarded as the last major artist in the Bunjinga tradition (also Nanga, under the influence of Chinese wenrenhua, literati paintings) and one of the first major artists of the Nihonga (Japanese style).
