Tomioka Tessai (1837 – 1924) A Japanese painting, ink on paper, mounted as hanging scroll, depicting orchid within the canyon, signed by the artist with three seals, together with a certificate of authentication from the Tomioka Tessai Authentication Society, no. 000529. 151.5 x 47cm, with two fitted wood boxes. cf. Tomioka Tessai is regarded as the last major artist in the Bunjinga tradition and one of the pioneers of the Nihonga style. He was educated as a scholar in classical Chinese philosophy and literature and the Japanese classics.
