This pastel will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the work of John Henry Twachtman by Lisa N. Peters, Ph.D. and Ira Spanierman. John Twachtman enjoyed carrying his drawing materials and etching plates on his rambles through the countryside during the years that he lived in Connecticut from the late 1880s through the 1890s. In this quickly rendered scene, probably created either in Branchville or Greenwich, Connecticut, he used just a few lines and shading to convey the presence of sunlight and shadow on an open road while through the angled perspective and the directional force of his chalks, he expressed a sense of forward movement. This drawing belonged to Twachtman's close friend J. Alden Weir, perhaps a recollection of strolls the two artists had taken together. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
