(no. 55) This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the work of John Henry Twachtman by Lisa N. Peters, Ph.D. and Ira Spanierman. Included in the artist's 1903 estate sale, this painting is among a group of images Twachtman created in the 1890s of the waterfall on Horseneck Brook, situated behind his home in Greenwich, Connecticut. The painting is unusual in depicting the falls in early spring, a time of year conveyed by Twachtman through a modern method of staining and rubbing color into the canvas. The result is a delicate and subtle surface tonality, against which the force and changing movement of the waterfall is pronounced. The painting's previous owners include the artist Arthur B. Davies, a friend of the artist, and the collector Joseph Hirshhorn, who lived in Greenwich, near Twachtman's former home. Hirshhorn owned the painting from 1962 until 1966, when it became part of the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
