(no. 52) This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the work of John Henry Twachtman by Lisa N. Peters, Ph.D. and Ira Spanierman. Twachtman's 1895 trip to Yellowstone, funded by Major William A. Wadsworth of Geneseo, New York, resulted in some of his most vibrant and abstract images. Of the sixteen paintings and one pastel extant from the sojourn, six are of waterfalls and four feature the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone, the subject of this painting. The other three are: Waterfall in Yellowstone (Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming), Lower Falls, Yellowstone (private collection), Lower Falls of the Yellowstone (private collection). Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt had included the Lower Falls in expansive vistas; by contrast, Twachtman focused on the color, movement, and texture of water and rock. Dr. Lisa N. Peters notes that the differences among the paintings suggest that Twachtman moved progressively closer to the falls, in the process studying changes in their audible and sensuous aspects. She states that this painting, the last in the series, shows the falls from the closest angle, concentrating the viewer's attention on qualities of the painted surface as much as on the falls, while conveying its oxymoronic fixed and mutable nature.
