(New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC), pp. 69, 194-95 color illus., no. 58 This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the work of John Henry Twachtman by Lisa N. Peters, Ph.D. and Ira Spanierman. In 1910 Twachtman's son Alden built a house on Round Hill Road just north of the farmhouse that had been his home during his youth. It was there several years after Alden's death in 1974, that this unfinished painting was found. Portraying a view of Horseneck Falls seen from below and looking northwest, the painting relates closely to the images of the falls that Twachtman painted about 1899, such as Waterfall, Blue Brook (Cincinnati Art Museum), in which he framed the falls closely within his pictorial formats and painted them with a rhythmic control of his brush that he sustained throughout his images. With many areas of exposed canvas visible, this painting provides an opportunity to see the movement of Twachtman's hand as he achieved a shimmering, variable light throughout the scene, maintaining overall cohesion across the picture plane.
