The current highest auction record for a paper work by Christian Kröner is more than €5,000 The present gouache is the work of Johann Christian Kröner (1838-1911), who is well recorded for his numerous animal depictions, especially of wild game. The small tondo features a landscape of hills with heath shrubs and birch trees, in which are situated a doe, a fawn and a roebuck. Further deer is visible in the background. The subtle colors of the composition and the picturesque brushstrokes are typical of Kröner's works. The gouache is signed, inscribed and dated 'Ch. Kröner D. 02' lower right. The paper has been laid down on cardboard and mounted under glass in a partly gilt wooden frame. The work shows typical wear marks with some cracks in the paint surface and small losses of color along the edges. The frame is in very good condition. The gouache measures 16.3 x 16 cm, the framed dimensions are 32 x 32 cm. Christian Johann Kröner (1838-1911) Christian Johann Kröner was born in Rinteln an der Weser and died in Düsseldorf in 1911. He was originally a decorative painter, dedicating himself fully to art from 1861. Kröner worked autodidactically in Munich and Düsseldorf, painting mostly landscapes in the forest of Teutoburg, the Harz mountain range and the Rügen area. His works are defined by atmospheric moods and a distinctive coloring. Kröner was awarded a gold medal at the Berlin Exposition.
