The currently highest auction record for a painting by Christian Kröner is approximately €18,000 The present work on paper by Johann Christian Kröner (1838-1911) features a typical subject of the artist, who is well recorded for his numerous game depictions. The watercolor with gouache features tree-covered rolling hills in Horath in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the middle ground, on a glade with tall grasses, branches and bushes are displayed almost hidden two deer that mingle nearly with the color of the undergrowth. The subtle lighting enhances the late summer landscape with an atmospheric image effect. The work is inscribed, signed and dated 'Horath. C. Kröner 87' lower right. The paper (indistinct water sign upper left) has been laid down on cardboard and framed under glass in a gilt ornament frame. The watercolor with gouache is in very good condition, showing only minor wear. The frame shows some losses. The work measures 21.7 x 29 cm, the framed dimensions are 39.5 x 46.5 cm. Johann Christian Kröner (1838-1911) Johann Christian Kröner was born in Rinteln at the Weser in 1838. He began as a decorative painter in his father's workshop and educated himself in wildlife and landscape painting. In 1863 he moved to Düsseldorf, where he was supported by the landscape painter Hugo Becker and became friends with Eugen Dücker and Carl Irmer, who partly taught at the Düsseldorf Academy. Kröner successfully exhibited at representative art exhibitions, including the Crystal Palace in London and the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1893, in Antwerp 1894 and Paris 1900 as well as the Kunstverein Düsseldorf 1919 and the Düsseldorf Anniversary Exhibition 1925.
